Quick summary

Is Wendy’s baked potato gluten free? The potato itself is. Wendy’s lists no allergens at all for the plain baked potato, and none of the standard toppings list wheat. Wendy’s still makes no gluten-free claim, and cross contact is possible.

  1. On Wendy’s allergen chart, the plain potato carries no allergen flags at all.
  2. Sour cream, cheese sauce, bacon, and chili list no wheat.
  3. Toppings add milk and soy, so only the plain potato is dairy free.
  4. Ask for it uncut and with clean gloves to lower cross contact.

That makes the baked potato one of the most asked-about picks for a gluten free meal at Wendy’s. The risk comes from toppings, gloves, and knives, not from the potato.

This guide walks through each potato, one topping at a time. You get the allergens, calories, and sodium for each, plus a safer way to order.

We share general guidance here, not medical advice. With celiac disease, ask your doctor whether a potato from a shared kitchen fits your diet.

Is Wendy's baked potato gluten free? The quick verdict

Yes for ingredients, with a cross-contact caution. Potatoes are naturally gluten free, and Wendy’s names no allergens for its plain baked potato.

Every standard topping also lists no wheat. That is rare on a fast-food menu.

What Wendy’s cannot promise is how each potato is handled. Wendy’s nutrition and food allergens page says cross contact is possible because of shared prep areas.

Topping by topping: the full comparison

Here are the five standard potatoes, as Wendy’s lists them. Prices are national reference figures, and your store sets its own.

1. Plain baked potato: the cleanest pick

This is the one people with celiac disease ask about most. Wendy’s names no allergens for it.

It is about 270 calories with 0 g of fat, 61 g of carbs, and 7 g of fiber. It also gives about 35% of your daily potassium.

Ask for it uncut. You can add salt, pepper, or your own topping at the table.

2. Sour cream and chive: adds milk, not wheat

The sour cream and chive potato adds Wendy’s light sour cream and chives.

The sour cream lists milk. Its thickeners are corn starch and xanthan gum, and no wheat is listed.

At about 300 calories and 55 mg of sodium, it is the lightest topped potato.

3. Cheese potato: the sauce is the variable

The cheese baked potato uses a cheddar cheese sauce. It lists milk and soy.

The sauce is thickened with modified corn starch, and no wheat is listed. Sauces are often a hidden gluten source, so this is worth knowing.

Sodium jumps to about 700 mg, so this is a heavier choice than the plain potato.

4. Bacon cheese: bacon lists no allergens

The bacon cheese potato adds applewood bacon to the cheese sauce.

Wendy’s names no allergens for the bacon. The milk and soy come from the cheese sauce.

It has about 420 calories and 17 g of protein, as Wendy’s lists it.

5. Chili and cheese: no saltines here

The chili cheese potato is the most filling, with about 21 g of protein.

A cup of chili comes with a saltine packet that lists wheat. A chili potato does not. Our chili gluten-free guide has the details.

Chili is ladled on the line, so it adds another shared tool. Sodium is also the highest, at about 830 mg.

How to order a baked potato with less cross contact

Even with every step above, a shared kitchen can still put a trace of gluten on your potato.

  • Order a plain potato, and ask for it uncut.
  • Mention a gluten allergy as you order so the crew swaps gloves before handling your potato.
  • If you want a topping, choose one and ask for it on the side.
  • Order inside or in the app so you can add a note.
  • Check the potato before you eat. Crumbs or a stray cracker are a sign to ask for a new one.

What people with celiac disease say

In a March 2025 r/Celiac thread about uncut Wendy’s potatoes, views split. Some called it the safest fast-food item they eat. Others did not trust shared gloves and topping wells.

One reply from a former crew member’s family said toppings can pick up crumbs from gloves. That is one story, not a test, but it explains why “uncut and plain” is the common advice.

Our Is Wendy’s safe for celiacs? guide puts these risks in one place.

Healthy information: why the plain potato stands out

A plain potato is one of the most nutritious items on the menu. It has 7 g of fiber, 7 g of protein, and almost no sodium.

Potassium supports healthy blood pressure, and a plain potato gives about a third of a day’s worth.

Toppings change the picture fast. Cheese and chili add 170 to 220 calories and up to 790 mg more sodium. Compare more items in the Wendy’s nutrition guide.
